Hardly anyone wonders about the magic of time. We are all so stressed out and in a hurry to complete our daily tasks that time is a mere element of our duties. Furthermore, the constant checks on the screens of our cell phone just place the indication of time in the background, with no visual progression. But it was not always like that, and many people are collecting timepieces from different periods of the past. If you ask around you, many people will consider the invention and use of a face with hands to acknowledge time as a quite recent creation.

Why watches are so extraordinary?

One of the most famous ancient watch is the one created for the Queen Marie-Antoinette, from 1783 to 1822. Even only the picture of this masterpiece is compelling. So, to have all the details about the watches throughout centuries, and to index all the models available today, there is only one solution : to use a watch database with care. If compared with other jewels, the first ever made watches are representing the climax of craftsmanship! Another reason to marvel is the stability and durability of the different mechanisms. This can all be detailed and listed, and compared to understand fully the improvements.

Another key element is the quality of gold, silver, or platinum. But these are all about museum artefacts, let’s speak about more modern objects. The watches became popular and widely used when people had a growing concern for respecting rhythms, and not in music! In fact, looking at the time during a day also defines how we are appreciating our activities. When the surge of production became vital during the industrial revolution, the usefulness of a face watch with hands became obvious for busy people. Another well-known fact about the development of the use of watches is the need for nurses to count the pulse with the help of a timepiece.

Otherwise, when the bigger part of the population was working in the fields, people were detailing the time thankfully to the rise and fall of the sun or to the sound of the church bell. Those times seem so distant from our actual urban lives! Still, a watch will be used to show a certain status among businessmen. Most surprisingly, certain companies classify expensive looking watches as forbidden to wear in their dress codes. They do not want their staff to appear richer than their clients. This is one evidence, if required, that the watch is still an important element of the appearance, and directly linked with social status.

Consequently, collectors are fully justified to be in awe about the ingenuity of their collected item. For investors, it is also a good decision to diversify purchases and to wait and see the amount of the original price rise with … time! All in all, it must not be forgotten that exceptional watches are produced from incredibly gifted men and women who learned their art for years. It also takes years to make an exceptional watch, minimum five years! When buying a new watch, the buyer has the exceptional thrill to be involved somehow in the process of creation!
