The letter
of the President of the Republic of Belarus Aleksander Lukashenka to the
President of the United States of America George W. Bush with commiserations
on the occasion of the first anniversary of terrorist attacks of September
11, 2001
Exactly a
year ago terrorists carried an unprecedented and treacherous attack on
American cities. The whole civilized world was with the American nation on
that day, experiencing its unbearable pain. We preserve in our hearts the
memory of the people who died guiltlessly in New York, Washington and
Pennsylvania in that dreadful morning of September 11, 2001.
The criminals struck even the remote Belarus: a young Belarusian woman lost
her life under the debris of the World Trade Center. The Belarusian nation
which survived the horrors of the World War II and the Chernobyl disaster
understands very well what the citizens of the United States of America had
to go through.
At the beginning of the 21st century the world has sensed the dark reality
of challenges and threats. We perceived also that the evil of international
terrorism can be rooted out only with concerted efforts.
The Republic of Belarus reckons itself as an integral part of international
counterterrorism coalition. We consistently support decisive measures to
stop and avert terrorist activity being undertaken by the United States and
other countries in the frames of international law. Our country actively
cooperates with Counterterrorism committee of the United Nations Security
Council and strives for making its own contribution in this common matter.
The Belarusian land has never been and will never be an asylum for
terrorists. We are ready to cooperate with the United States of America and
with other countries of the world in order to ultimately win over
international terrorism. I am convinced that normalization of bilateral
relations between the Republic of Belarus and the United States of America
which has no objective obstacles can be more effective for the good of both
nations.
Please accept, Mr. President, on behalf of Belarusian people and me
personally our sincere commiserations to all American people who suffered in
the tragedy of September 11, 2001.
Minsk, September 11, 2002
Aleksander Lukashenka.
