Belarus Has
Joined to the International Organization for Migration
Washington, D.C., November 29, 2005
At
the 90th session of the Council of the International Organization for
Migration (IOM) that took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 29,
2005, member states of the organization unanimously voted for Belarus'
accession to IOM.
This event is very important for Belarus. Before this date the country had
been actively participating in IOM' activities for more than 10 years as an
observer and achieved substantial results combating of illegal migration.
As
IOM Director General Brunson McKinley stated during his recent meeting with
the Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva Siarghei Aleinik the
official accession of Belarus to IOM would become logical continuation of
the efforts made by the Belarusian Government at the national and
international levels to regulate migration and to fight against illegal
migration and negative phenomena connected with it. Brunson McKinley noted
that the membership in IOM will help Belarus to considerably expand
framework of technical cooperation on migration issues and the access to
modern technologies and methods applied in this field.
Belarus stands ready to continue active and constructive work in all fields
of international activity connected with migration.
