On 19 November 2005 at the 33rd Conference of the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held in Rome, the FAO
member states voted for accession of Belarus.
In the congratulation speech FAO Director-General Jacques
Diouf noted a considerable contribution of Belarus to agricultural
development, nature management and environmental protection and stressed
that Belarus is striving for full-scale international cooperation in these
areas.
Accession to FAO will allow Belarus to employ the mechanisms
of multilateral cooperation on a broader platform for reforming its
agricultural and forestry sectors in light of Belarus’ perspective accession
to WTO, improvement of the competitiveness of the Belarusian agricultural
sector at the international markets, its consistent adaptation to the EU
standards as well as in light of mitigation of the Chernobyl consequences
for agriculture and nature management.
FAO will be able to provide technical and information
assistance to Belarus in such areas as water, land and bio-sphere
management, analysis of problems facing the agro-industrial sector and to
give recommendations on standardization of productions in line with WTO
requirements. Besides, FAO can organize trainings for agricultural sector
professionals and provide assistance in organizing price monitoring in
Belarus. |
