Address by the
Members of the Republican Coordinating Committee of Political Parties and
Public Associations' Leaders to Citizens of the Republic of Belarus and the
International Community
Distinguished Fellow Citizens,
A
stable and businesslike atmosphere in the Belarusian society on the eve of
the Parliamentary Elections and all-nation Referendum is clearly against the
grain of the governments of certain countries. The emergence of the
so-called Belarus Democracy Act can only be accounted for a nervous
breakdown of the US leadership. Regrettably, the US Congress approved it.
Being essentially a political ultimatum and an example of flagrant
interference into internal affairs of a sovereign state, this document is in
contravention of the democratic principles of international cooperation and
proves the use of double standards by the United States of America against
the Republic of Belarus. It has everything in it, including advice on how to
run elections. What is, though, missing from it, is the recognition of the
Belarus' people's sovereign right to elect its Government and to be the
master in the house of its own. Such methods of communication are
unacceptable and destructive for a country with dignity.
The Belarusians have always been amenable to kind advice and suggestions,
but never would they allow for decisions to be taken for them by someone
else, or for a strange order to be established in their Motherland.
And today, on the eve of the elections to the supreme legislative organ of
the country and Constitutional Referendum, we, as members of the Republican
Coordinating Committee – leaders of political parties and public
associations, declare that nobody shall prevent the Belarusian people from
exercising its legitimate right and making a free and conscious choice on 17
October 2004, supporting the policy pursued by President Alexander
Lukashenko for a stronger and more prosperous Belarus.
We
call upon voters to say YES to Belarus!
We
call upon the international community to support the Belarusian people and
its choice!
