PRESS RELEASE
Washington, D.C., May 11, 2005
Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus
Minsk, May 8, 2005
The
Republic of Belarus is alarmed by the statements regarding Belarus made by the
leaders of the Baltic states and of the United States and considers them as
contradicting the international principles, declared in the United Nations
Charter and in the OSCE documents.
The Baltic states embark on a dangerous path of interfering into the internal
affairs of the Republic of Belarus, which is inadmissible and may lead to
creating tension in the region. Attempts by certain states to “implant”
democratic values in Belarus “from the back entrance” run counter to
establishing civilized and pragmatic interstate relations.
The policy of “driving a wedge” between the brotherly peoples of Belarus and
Russia will be in vain; it has no future by definition and it discredited itself
in practice long ago. Belarus will continue to develop relations with the
Russian Federation within the framework of setting up the Union State.
The Republic of Belarus will independently define the ways of its democratic
development, assigning primary importance to stability of the state and
prosperity of its citizens.
