PRESS RELEASE

Washington, D.C. April 14, 2008

China Opposes US Sanctions against Belarus

On April 14, 2008, Ms. Jiang Yu, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, commented on the US Expansion of Economic Sanctions against Belarus as follows.

Quote:

“Question: The US has expanded economic sanctions against Belarus recently. The bilateral diplomatic tension is escalating. How do you comment on that?

Answer: We express our concern over the US expansion of economic sanctions against Belarus.

China always opposes interfering with the domestic affairs of other countries and exerting pressure on others under the pretext of democracy and human rights. We are against the unbridled use or threat of sanctions in international affairs.

China believes that it is not helpful for the normal state-to-state relations and the development of international trade to force one country to follow the interests of another by economic means.

It's well known that under the leadership of Belarus President Lukashenko, Belarus enjoys social stability, sustainable economic development, and constant improvement of people's livelihood. The international community should have an objective and just evaluation.

We hope relevant countries can resolve disputes through dialogue on the basis of equality and mutual respect.”
