PRESS RELEASE
On Statement by the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of Belarus on the Decision by the US and the EU to Impose Visa
Restrictions With Respect to Belarusian Officials
Washington,
D.C., April 10, 2006
The European Union and the United States
can not change the Belarusian people’s choice. This choice has been made.
The absolute majority of Belarus’ citizens have elected Aleksander
Lukashenko as their President. Today’s decision has demonstrated the failure
of Washington and Brussels to treat with respect the clearly expressed will
of an independent nation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states
once again: responding to the people’s choice with restrictions means
rejecting the Belarusian citizens’ right to live in their country with their
own wits, not with somebody else’s.
No one but our people will be the master
in the home of our own.
Belarus views the position of the European
Union and the US as uncivilized. Such actions are shortsighted and have no
prospects.
The Republic of Belarus is placed before
the necessity to undertake adequate reciprocal measures with regard to the
EU and the US. These measures will affect the corresponding category of
persons in accordance with the international practice.
