PRESS RELEASE

On Statement by Sean McCormack, Spokesman of the US State Department of February 3, 2006 on Relations with Belarus

Washington, D.C., February 8, 2006

With regard to the Statement made by the Spokesman of the US State Department on February 3, 2006, the Embassy of Belarus states the following.

Belarus was surprised at this statement. We can not understand reasons of such misinterpretation on the part of the Department of State regarding visit to Belarus of Assistant Secretary Daniel Fried.

Belarus develops independent relations with the European Union and the United States. That is why Belarus proposed to hold two separate visits. It is also necessary to remind that the initiative to organize the visit of the EU representatives to Belarus originally comes from Minsk. Belarus agreed with the US proposal to hold a visit of Mr. Daniel Fried to Belarus on February 1-2, 2006 and did not fail to issue visas allowing Mr. Daniel Fried to enter Belarus.

Belarus consciously agreed to the visits of representatives of both the European Union and United States. Belarusian side agreed, if necessary, to issue visas at the airport upon arrival of the US representative. Belarus also showed its readiness to render necessary assistance to organize the visit.

Belarus reiterates readiness to set up firm and constructive relations with the United States based on partnership and mutual respect.

We hope that the United States will demonstrate in practice its constructive approach to interact with Belarus.
