PRESS RELEASE
Statement by the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus
Washington, D.C., August 11, 2004
In connection with the statement by Senator John McCain of 10 August 2004 on his intention to visit Belarus placed on his official web site today the Embassy makes public its reply given to Senator McCain on 4 August 2004.
“Belarus is interested in developing constructive dialogue with the United States. We would be happy to welcome a delegation from the US Congress in Belarus. However, the proposed date is not completely acceptable.
The Belarusian side proposes that this visit be postponed to a later date. A good time for a visit by the Congressional delegation will possibly be the time after completion of election campaigns both in Belarus and in the United States.”
The Embassy also requested Senator McCain to clarify the purpose of the visit, since the stated purpose of the trip to Belarus was “to meet with US Government official leaders to discuss security issues”.
