International Competition on Project
of Park "Valley of Memory" in "Trostenets" Announced in Minsk
The Minsk Executive Council announced an International Open
Competition on architectural and art project of "Valley of Memory" Park
within the Memorial Complex "Trostenets", Minsk (Belarus).
The Complex will be created to commemorate 206,500 Nazi
victims eliminated in 1941-1945 near Trostenets village. Representatives of
different nationalities, civilians from Russia, Poland, France, Czech
Republic and from other states were prisoners and victims of the
concentration camp "Trostenets".
The Complex in Trostenets will become one of the largest
memorials in the world commemorated Holocaust victims.
Park "Valley of Memory" will be the final element of the
Memorial Complex "Trostenets" and will become its philosophical and
dominating idea.
The main goals for the Competition are to find the most
significant, correct and laconic landscape and character solution of the
territory of the park and its elements in accordance with a general idea of
the Memorial.
The Competition is open to individuals, arts groups and
juridical persons. The first prize amounts to $20,000, second to $10,000 and
third to $5,000.

President of Belarus Signs Decree on
Minsk Historical Center Development
On July 14, the President of the Republic of Belarus signed
into action Decree “On Developing the Historical Center of Minsk.”
The document identifies the confines of the historical center
and approves the Concept of reconstruction, development and functional use
of properties and the area covered by the historical centre that includes
the Upper Town, the Trinity Suburb, the Rakovsky Suburb, and the
archaeological reserve "Minsk Zamchishche" (“Castle Hill”).
NBB Launches Memorable Coins Dedicated
to National Festival
The National Bank of Belarus (NBB) plans to put into
circulation new silver and copper-nickel memorable coins dedicated to the
National Festival Kupalle.
The coin is a part of the series "Belarusian Festivals and
Rites". The bank minted 3,000 “uncirculated” quality silver coins. A coin is
38.61 millimeters in diameter and contains 31.1 grams of 925 silver. The
nominal value has been set at 20 Belarusian rubles.
The bank also minted 5,000 “uncirculated” quality
copper-nickel coins. A coin is 33 millimeters in diameter with the nominal
value of 1 Belarusian ruble.
A silver coin may be purchased for the equivalent of U.S.
$15, and a copper-nickel coin for $3.
The coins are a legal tender of Belarus for all debts, public
and private without restriction.
Collection of Fruits and Berries of
National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Is One of the Largest in Central and
Eastern Europe
The collection of fruits and berries of the Belarusian
National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is one of the biggest in the Central and
Eastern Europe and includes more than 80 kinds, 1,300 sorts and 1,600
hybrids.
In 1930-2003 with the help of selection the scientists of the
NAS managed to create 174 sorts of fruits and berries.
In particular, there are 24 new sorts of black and 5 of red
currants, 15 sorts of gooseberries, 13 – strawberries, 3 – raspberries, 2 –
sea-buckthorn and 4 sorts of grapes. The NAS collection numbers 940 sorts of
berries including prospective hybrids.
The current assortment is adapted to the soil and climate
conditions of Belarus and allows consumers to cultivate fresh berries all
the year round.
