The Belarusian President Made a Short-Term Visit to Slovenia

 

On March 16, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko completed his short-term visit to the Republic of Slovenia.

During his visit, the Belarusian President had a number of working meetings with prominent politicians and members of the business community. The meetings that were held focused on ways to strengthen the bilateral economic cooperation and expand contacts between the banking and industrial sectors of Belarus and Slovenia. Great attention was drawn to discussing the prospects of the European Union enlargement, the role and place of European Union neighboring states in this process, including Belarus, and the development of political dialogue between them.

 

President of Belarus Congratulates Vladimir Putin on His Election as President of Russia

 

On March 15, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Vladimir Putin on his election as President of the Russian Federation. 

"Your convincing victory is indicative of your high authority and support by the voters of your policy line aimed at strengthening the Russian statehood. In your re-election we in the Republic of Belarus pin our hopes on dynamic development of the integration process. I am confident that consolidation of the Belarusian-Russian union meets the interests of our peoples and creates a reliable basis for the worthy life of present and future generations," the message of felicitation says. 

President Lukashenko wished Vladimir Putin good health and implementation of all his initiatives during his tenure as President, and he wished peace and prosperity to the brotherly people of Russia.

 

On Visit of Belarusian Foreign Minister to United Arab Emirates

 

On March 15, 2004 Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov had a working visit to the United Arab Emirates. 

Sergei Martynov met with Deputy Prime Minister, State Minister on Foreign Affairs of UAE Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Economy and Trade of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Quasimi and Director General of Abu Dhabi Development Fund Said Mattar Halfan Al Rumaiti. 

During the meeting with the State Minister on Foreign Affairs the parties discussed the urgent issues of bilateral relations. 

A message from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was conveyed to Sheikh Hamdan. 

The parties expressed mutual interest in organizing the work of the joint commission on trade and economic cooperation. 

The prospects of financing the projects of energy infrastructure development by Abu Dhabi development fund were also discussed. 

At the meeting with the Minister of Economy and Trade of the United Arab Emirates the sides discussed the issues of bilateral interaction in trade and economic sphere. 

In the course of the meeting with the Director General of Abu Dhabi Development Fund the sides discussed the issues of credit cooperation. 

 

On Visit of Belarusian Foreign Minister to Sultanate Oman

 

On March 16, 2004 Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov visited Sultanate Oman.

Sergei Martynov was received by the Deputy Prime Minister of Sultanate Oman. The sides discussed the issues of development of Belarus-Oman contacts at top and high levels, urgent problems of bilateral and multilateral relations.

During the negotiations between Sergei Martynov and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sultanate of Oman the sides stated the interest in increasing bilateral cooperation in all spheres, above all in the sphere of economic interaction.

As a result of the negotiations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman an intergovernmental agreement on trade and economic cooperation and Memorandum on understanding between foreign ministries of Belarus and Oman were signed.

On the Belarusian Folk Crafts Products

 

The Belarusian concern "Belkhudozpromysly" consists of 17 enterprises which produce original and unique Belarusian folk crafts, goods and souvenirs like art weaving, embroidery, knitting, strawplaiting, wickering, leather-braiding, macrame, birch-bark wickering, wood-carving, marquetry, pottery and ceramics and wood/ceramics painting. 

Maintaining and further developing this unique sector of the art industry in the current environment are the main objects of the Concern.

The Concern is wiling to collaborate in the sphere of sale and procurement of raw materials and supplies for their manufacture with business partners form the USA.

On Growth of GDP in Belarus in January-February

 

The gross domestic product (GDP) of Belarus made BYR 6,112 billion in comparable prices in January-February 2004, growing by 9.5%.

In January-February specific weight of industrial added value in the GDP made 30%, agricultural added value – 2.2%, construction industry added value – 4.4%, transport and communications added value – 14.4%, trade and catering industry added value – 11.4%.

Industrial production output in January-February made BYR 6.7 trillion (6.8% up). 

Over this period fuel industry output surged by 5.7%, ferrous metallurgy by 63.8%, timber, woodworking, pulp and paper industry by 11.2%, food industry by 9.3%, construction materials industry by 14.9%, mechanical engineering and metal-working industry by 16%, power engineering by 14.1%, chemical and petrochemical industry by 19.5% and light industry by 9.3%. 

Belarusian industrial companies increased production volumes of 353 out of the 572 most important types of produce. As many as 1,590 companies (78.1% of their total number) increased production volumes, while 436 enterprises (21.4%) reduced production volumes. 

As many as 608 companies revealed a 20% and higher increment in production output, at 249 companies the figure dropped by 20% and more.

Belarus’ MTZ Tractor Exports up by 35.6% in January-February to 4,894

 

The tractor exports of Belarus’ state-owned tractor manufacturer Minsk Tractor Plant (MTZ) increased by 35.6% in January-February to 4,894 vehicles.

Exports to non-CIS foreign states amounted to 1,001 tractors in January-February (up by 20%).

In 2003 MTZ increased tractor exports by 32% to 21,530 vehicles, including exports to non-CIS foreign states at 8,203 tractors (up by 24%).

MTZ is one of the world’s largest tractor makers and the biggest tractor producer in the CIS. The plant has an annual capacity of up to 50,000 tractors, including 10,000 tractors with the capacity of 100-200 hp. MTZ exports 85% of its output. Russia accounts for 50% of all MTZ’s exports.

Film “Anastasia of Slutsk” to Be Shown in USA, Russia, Poland and Lithuania

 

Belarusian film “Anastasia of Slutsk” directed by Yuri Elkhov will be shown in the USA, Russia, Poland and Lithuania. 

In April the film will take part in the 37th annual film-festival in Houston. Its contest program is expected to include 55 films from different countries.

The film will also take part in the International Festival in Vilnius and in the Contest Program of the International Film Festival of the Slav and Orthodox nations “Golden Vitiaz”, which will be held in Irkutsk (Russia).

 

On the 8th International Specialized Fair Mass Media in Belarus

 

The 8th International Specialized Fair Mass Media in Belarus will take place in Minsk on May 4-7, 2004. The main objects of the fair are the expansion of information field of Belarus, integration in world information sphere and promotion of Belarusian Mass Media. 

Belarus invites representatives of government institution, business associations and private enterprises, publishing houses of the USA to take part in this event.
