Alexander Lukashenko Expresses Condolences to King of Spain Juan Carlos in Connection with Tragedy in Madrid

 

On March 11 President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed condolences to King of Spain Juan Carlos and the Spanish people in connection with the explosions which had claimed many lives.

 

Belarusian Foreign Ministry Works on Uniting Integration Processes in West and East of Europe

 

The foreign ministry of Belarus makes all efforts in order that integration processes in the west and east of Europe “do not become isolated”. Minister of Foreign Affaires Sergei Martynov believes that both integration systems are to move towards each other to create pan-European economic space.

While commenting on possible accession of Belarus to the European Union, Sergei Martynov stated that economically such step would in many respects cut the republic from important sources of energy and raw materials, as well as from markets in the east. “We have no intentions to give away these sources and markets. The countries of the European Union are struggling to get access to the markets of Russia, CIS etc”, he concluded.

 

On Meeting of International Chernobyl Forum

 

The second organizational meeting of the International Chernobyl Forum under the aegis of the IAEA was held in Vienna on March 10-12.

At the meeting the participants considered the Forum’s results in 2003 and discussed the further activity, including the preparation to the final conference where the conclusions of experts on medical and radio-ecological aftermath of the Chernobyl catastrophe will be presented.

Members of the Belarusian delegation reported on the measures for liquidating the consequences of the catastrophe and within the framework of the state program for overcoming the Chernobyl catastrophe.

 

On Cooperation between Security Councils of Belarus, Poland, Russia and Ukraine

 

Border status and cooperation for fight against transborder crime should be a priority in relations between Belarus, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. 

The talks at the meeting of the heads of the Security Councils of Belarus, Poland, Russia and Ukraine were dedicated to the most recent problems of international regional security, extension of the European Union and NATO, cooperation in the fight against international terrorism and organized crime, strengthening regimes of non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons, counteraction to illegal migration and transborder crime. A lot of attention was paid to prospects of settling the situation in Iraq. 

Participants noted that most dangerous threats to the modern world are connected with international terrorism and organized crime. Opposing the threats requires coordinated efforts of the international community led by the UN and accompanied by the assistance of OSCE, NATO, and the European Union. 

 

ECONOMY

 

On Results of Foreign Trade in January 2004

 

Belarusian goods turnover grew by 17.6% in January 2004 and amounted to $1699.2 million.
Export in cost terms amounted to $851.9 million, showing a 23.3% increase. Import totaled $847.3 million (raised by 12.4%).

The great difference between export and import resulted in a positive trade balance equalling $4.6 million. In January 2003 the trade balance was negative and equalled $62.8 million.

Higher export growth rate was caused by higher prices for trucks ($17.1 million), half-finished products made of iron and plain steel ($15.3 million), potash fertilizers ($13.4 million), components for automobiles and tractors ($10.4 million), and several other goods.

Alexander Lukashenko Congratulates Chernobyl Heart’s Director on Winning Oscar 

 

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Director of the 2004 Oscar winner documentary Mariann Daleo and wished her further creative successes.

“Belarus joins efforts in order to overcome outcomes of the radioactive contamination. Annually the republican budget allocates considerable funds for healthcare of population, first of all children. We welcome the people of good will who come to our help and make their contribution in overcoming consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe”, the Presidential message states.

 

25 Countries Confirm Their Participation in Festival “Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk-2004”

 

Representatives from 25 countries have confirmed their participation in the 13th International Art Festival “Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk-2004”. There will be representatives not only from Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and other Slavic states but also from the USA, France, Great Britain, Israel, Korea, and Singapore. The festival is expecting 6,000 artists, guests and journalists. 

A large program for the youth will be also organized during the festival. Rock-groups from Russia and Ukraine have been invited to come to Vitebsk. Besides, the International Youth Forum will be held.

The program of “Slavic Bazaar” includes traditional Days of Culture of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine as well. Cinema programs and theater meetings are scheduled to take place.

Some 21 participants from 18 countries will take part in the young performers’ contest. Their mastery will be judged by the international jury, which will be made up of representatives of the states-organizers of the festival as well as of representatives from Bulgaria, Israel, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, USA, France, Serbia and Montenegro. The jury is expected to be headed by the founder and president of the International Federation of Festival Organizations, Professor Armando Moreno (USA).

The youngest singers will also take part in the festival. The international children’s music contest will gather participants aged between 7-12 years. 

“Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk – 2004” will finish on July 21. The program will be dedicated to the Day of the Sister Nations’ Friendship.
