President of Belarus Presents Jubilee Medals to Veterans of Great Patriotic War

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko presented jubilee medals "60th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945" to a group of veterans.

Alexander Lukashenko stated that Belarusian people “will always remember those, who during the war fought for the freedom and independence of the Motherland”.

On the appointment of the Consul General of Belarus in New York

Belarusian President agreed for the appointment of Nikolai Lepeshko as the Consul General of the Republic of Belarus in New York.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Belarus MPs to Attend OSCE Winter Session

Belarusian parliamentarians take part in the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna. 

The National Assembly is represented by Deputy Head of the Commission for Local Self-Government and Regulations of the Lower Chamber Mikhail Orda and Head of the Commission for Legislation and State Construction Natalia Andreychik. 

Mikhail Orda said that “the winter session of the PA tables the agenda for the annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly, which is due to be held in Washington, DC in June 2005.” 

In Vienna Belarusian members of Parliament are also planning to meet with their foreign counterparts, including western parliamentarians.

Belarus to Enhance Military Cooperation with Neighbors

Belarus is going to expand military co-operation with neighboring states, Defense Minister Colonel-General Leonid Maltsev said.

Belarus is planning to enhance military cooperation with Russia within the framework of the Union State as well as with the CIS Collective Security Treaty members.

The Minister stressed, that Belarus tries to maintain friendly relations with all neighboring countries.

Leonid Maltsev also underlined that military reforms will enable the Belarusian Army to resist modern threats and challenges and raise its battle capacity. 

Belarusian Military to Join NATO Manoeuvres

For the first time a unit of the Belarusian Armed Forces will take part in a NATO-sponsored training, the Belarusian Defense Ministry reported.

The Belarusian military plan to join a tactical training “Cooperative Best Effort 2005” scheduled to take place at Yavorovsk training center (Ukraine). “The exercise is part of the NATO program “Partnership for Peace”. The training is supposed to prepare troops for partaking in actions aimed at supporting international peace and security,” said the source.

The Belarusian unit will attend the manoeuvres as part of a multinational peace-keeping battalion. The number of Belarusian military that will participate in the training will be 17, in particular, one motorized rifle squad and officers to fill supervising positions.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

Belarus Increases Science Funding by 31% in 2005

Budget expenditures on science in 2005 will increase by 31% against 2004 to make BYR 253 billion, the Council of Ministers reported. 

The structure of expenditures remained unchanged if compared with 2004, while the financing of some items grew proportionally by 25-30%. 

In particular, fundamental research funding will get BYR 235.5 billion, design works, BYR 101.2 billion. Besides, the expenditures on innovation projects will be covered with BYR 11.7 billion of budget funds.
The sum also includes the funding for international scientific and technical co-operation (BYR 8.7 billion) and personnel training (BYR 6 billion) and archive maintenance (BYR 2.9 billion).

International TV Channel Belarus-TV Begins Broadcasting On-Line 

The international TV channel Belarus-TV began broadcasting on-line.

For the first time a Belarusian channel can be watched online on the site of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company – www.tvr.by. The producer center noted that to watch the channel you need Microsoft Windows Media Player 9.0 and higher. The access to internet is to be no lower than 96 kilobit/second. 

The Vitebsk University Provides Scholarship for Tsunami Victim

The Vitebsk State Medicine University granted a free of charge education course for a student from Sri Lanka whose family perished in tsunami in South Asia in late 2004, stated Rector of the University Alexander Kosinets.

The rector added that it was a unanimous decision of the University Council.
