Belarus, being a participant of the Children Rights Convention since 1990,
considers the protection of the children’s rights and interests as one of
the priorities of the state policy. The adoption of the new presidential
program Children of Belarus for 2006-2010 in the near future will become the
next step in this direction. This fact was underlined by the Belarusian
delegation at the 61st session of the UN Commission on Human Rights in
Geneva, BelTA was told in the foreign ministry.
As
the Belarusian representatives noted, the state pays great attention to the
children suffered from the Chernobyl catastrophe. The protection of the
rights and interests of more than 300 thousand children is envisaged by the
subprogram Children of Chernobyl implemented within the framework of the
presidential program Children of Belarus for 2001-2005.
The adoption of the guidelines on empowering children and ensuring their
rights for 2004-2010 provided a new impetus in the field of securing the
rights of the children in Belarus. The document focuses on creating
wholesome conditions for appropriate physical, intellectual and moral
development of the younger generation. It also aims at boosting the quality
of life of children, preservation of their health, protection from violence
and cruelty. The document also targets implantation of the recommendations
of the special session of the UN General Assembly and the Committee on the
Rights of the Child.
The Belarusian delegation pointed out that the country takes gradual steps
in enhancing its presence in international treaties in the field of
protection of children’s rights. Belarus adhered to the Optional protocol to
the Convention on the Rights of the Child which concerns child traffic,
child prostitution and child pornography.
Belarus is undergoing the final stage of its accession to another important
international treaty, namely, to the Optional protocol to the Convention on
the Rights of the Child which is related to exposure of the children to
military conflicts.
