Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI) signs CORE Program
The Minsk Times, June 9, 2005
The Chernobyl Children’s Project International – an American Charity – has
signed the Declaration of Principles on the CORE (Cooperation for
Rehabilitation) Program. The formal ceremony took place at the Belarusian
Embassy in the USA. World Bank officials and American charities providing
aid to Belarus attended the event. The Ambassador of Belarus to the USA,
Mikhail Khvostov, emphasized that the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster
has affected every Belarusian negatively and will continue to do so for many
years to come. “The international community has already sent aid to our
country, but it is very important for us to continue accepting this aid,”
the diplomat said. “The CORE Program is a unique instrument for this kind of
aid.”
Chernobyl Children’s Project International Inc. is the first American
organization to join the CORE Program. As Kathy Ryan, CCPI Executive
Director, said, “This organization will cooperate with Belarus to support
the community programs aimed at minimizing the aftermath of the Chernobyl
disaster.”
CORE is a complex program funding projects in the four contaminated regions
of Belarus.
Embassy officials also took part in opening of Gabriela Bulisova’s photo
exhibit dedicated to the Chernobyl tragedy. Ms. Bulisova first came to
Belarus in 2003 with CCPI convoy. She intends to visit Belarus again this
autumn to photograph a new project entitled Chernobyl: 20 Years, 20 Lives.
