are Vital

Belarus, Russia and
Ukraine need international assistance to alleviate Chernobyl consequences.
Belarus, Ukraine
and Russia have issued a joint press release at the UN headquarters in New
York to emphasize that the consequences of Chernobyl still present a current
challenge. Each country which suffered from the accident at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant still needs international help to solve related problems
for human health and the environment. The 60th Session of the UN General
Assembly approved a resolution regarding these continuing problems and
resolved to make efforts to minimize the consequences of the catastrophe. UN
agencies and donors were called on to support national measures.
The three countries
emphasized that international collaboration is now moving from humanitarian
support to regeneration and long-term development. Funding is needed to pay
for a new cover for the damaged Chernobyl reactor.
