The Minsk Times

January 12, 2006

It is known that a large international conference on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is to be held in Minsk in April. Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Belarus, expressed her hope that the forum would promote international cooperation in the field of stable development, rehabilitation and a rise in living standards within those regions suffering as a result of the Chernobyl tragedy.

Speaking about the plans, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu also noted the projects of the UN Development Programme, UN Children’s Fund and UN Population Fund up to 2010. These social and economic programs’ realization will require about $40 million. Moreover, she said that the World Bank will proceed with its work on the documents stipulating the allocation of a $50 million loan to Belarus under the project aimed at the rehabilitation of the contaminated areas. It was also mentioned that the International Finance Corporation is preparing the projects in the field of small and medium business’ support. The UN Office in Belarus is aimed at achieving the long-term goals, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu stressed.
