Chernobyl Conference to Become an Important Event in 2006 for the UN Office
in Belarus

It
is known that a large international conference on the occasion of the 20th
anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is to be
held in Minsk in April. Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP
Resident Representative to the Republic of Belarus, expressed her hope that
the forum would promote international cooperation in the field of stable
development, rehabilitation and a rise in living standards within those
regions suffering as a result of the Chernobyl tragedy.
Speaking about the plans, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu also noted the projects of
the UN Development Programme, UN Children’s Fund and UN Population Fund up
to 2010. These social and economic programs’ realization will require about
$40 million. Moreover, she said that the World Bank will proceed with its
work on the documents stipulating the allocation of a $50 million loan to
Belarus under the project aimed at the rehabilitation of the contaminated
areas. It was also mentioned that the International Finance Corporation is
preparing the projects in the field of small and medium business’ support.
The UN Office in Belarus is aimed at achieving the long-term goals, Ms.
Cihan Sultanoglu stressed.
